USB Type-C becomes the standar

Starting on 28 December 2024, EU consumers will benefit from a universal charging solution for their devices, as new rules for a common charger come into effect, a statement by the EU Parliament read.

"Under these rules, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earbuds sold in the EU must have a USB Type-C charging port. From 28 April 2026, this requirement will apply to laptops."

The directive also harmonises fast-charging requirements and provides consumers the opt out option of receiving a new charger with each device purchase, it said.

"Manufacturers will be required to update their packaging to clearly display information about charging characteristics and what is included with each purchase."

MEP Anna Cavazzini (Greens/EFA), Chair of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, said: "This milestone marks a decisive step towards consumer convenience and environmental responsibility. Starting tomorrow, consumers can enjoy a future where one charger works across a variety of electronics, regardless of their brand. These rules offer benefits for everyone - from reducing environmental waste to helping households clear their drawers full of incompatible or unused chargers."

"These rules are about tackling the tonnes of waste generated by discarded chargers each year and saving an estimated €250 million for EU households by eliminating unnecessary charger purchases each year."

"We are seeing countries outside the EU aligning with our approach, demonstrating Parliament's decade-long push for a universal charger is also becoming a global standard. We will closely monitor how manufacturers adapt to these changes and look forward to the Commission's studies on wireless charging evolution and future unbundling requirements. It is vital to ensure consumers have the tools to continue to make smart and sustainable choices as the market evolves."
