Heritage Malta has launched a new display at the Malta National Aquarium, offering an immersive journey into local underwater sites - ranging from ancient Phoenician shipwrecks to World War II wrecks and war graves.
At this new exhibition, located on the upper floor of the Malta National Aquarium, visitors can virtually dive the depths of the Mediterranean using cutting-edge technology. Interactive tools, including holograms, allow guests to examine intricate details of submerged artefacts and wrecks, while projections and cinematic presentations provide captivating narratives about these hidden treasures. Artefacts from the national collection are also on display, creating a tangible connection to these underwater marvels.
Designed by Heritage Malta's Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, the displays combine advanced digital tools prepared by the agency's Technology and Experience Development Unit, with engaging storytelling, making the inaccessible accessible. This multi-sensory experience aims to inspire visitors of all ages, fostering a deeper appreciation for Malta's maritime history and highlighting the critical importance of preserving these underwater treasures for future generations.
Noel Zammit, Heritage Malta's CEO, stated that, "This display is a perfect example of how we can merge heritage with innovation to create meaningful connections with our past. It allows visitors to engage with Malta's underwater treasures in ways never possible before, broadening the reach and impact of our cultural heritage."
Professor Timmy Gambin, Head of the Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, commented that, "The installation of this display at Malta's National Aquarium manifests Heritage Malta's commitment to take Malta's underwater sites to the people. It is also a prime example of how public-private partnerships can deliver top quality products that enhance educational experiences for locals and tourists alike."
Mark Pace, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Malta National Aquarium, remarked that: "The Malta National Aquarium and Heritage Malta have enjoyed a long and successful partnership, including this recent project showcasing Malta's underwater heritage and the work of Professor Timmy Gambin's team. We are optimistic about expanding this initiative, offering the public a fresh perspective on Malta's history."
As an added benefit, holders of the Heritage Malta Multisite Pass can enjoy free access to the Malta National Aquarium, and Heritage Malta members benefit from a 50% discount.
