On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Nationalist Party took the opportunity to remember all victims of domestic violence and femicide in Malta. Among them are Bernice Cassar and Nicolette Ghirxi, as well as many other women who live with ongoing challenges, often in silence, because they face violence from those who are supposed to love and protect them. These cases are a harsh reminder of the urgent need for real change and systems that work for the vulnerable.
Despite improvements in certain areas and legislation, the systems that are supposed to protect women in our country are repeatedly failing, the PN said. This is evident when we consider the substantial number of 2,471 pending domestic violence cases in the courts, many of which are still awaiting their first hearing. Excessive delays not only harm the victims but also place them at greater risk of suffering further abuse and, in some cases, preventable tragedies. The PN insisted that laws on paper are not enough. What is needed is an effective system and immediate action to prevent further tragedies. It is time to move from words to action.
The PN said it cannot accept that such a day needs to be marked in our country for us to recognise the gravity of the problem. Daily commitments must be driven by a sense of urgency and responsibility to protect all women - not just with fine words, but with concrete and practical actions that ensure their safety and prevention of harm.
On this day, the PN pledged its commitment to continue working towards a fair and efficient system that supports those in danger. We need a system that provides immediate and effective protection to those who report violence and offers victims not just hope but also real solutions and immediate safety.
The PN said it believes that without concrete action, there can be no real change. Therefore, we are committed to building a society together where every woman is free from fear, where her voice is heard, and where it is acted upon.
