In a meeting at Auberge de Castille with European Council President-elect António Costa, Prime Minister Robert Abela spoke about various topics of mutual interest for Malta and the European Union.
The Maltese Prime Minister emphasized the need to continue working towards a Single Market that benefits everyone, aiming to strengthen the EU's competitiveness, a government statement read. He stated that equal access must be ensured for all Member States, pointing out that crucial sectors like pharmaceuticals and freight still face obstacles that hinder the Single Market from reaching its full potential.
Prime Minister Abela noted that this impacts Malta, highlighting the country's opposition to a "one-size-fits-all" policy. He elaborated on the importance of reinforcing incentive policies, particularly in the context of digital and environmental transitions, to drive innovation and quality growth among small and medium enterprises, which form the backbone of the economy.
During the meeting with Costa, who is set to begin his term as European Council President on December 1, 2024, Prime Minister Abela also raised the issue of migration and the importance of continuing cooperation with North African countries, particularly Libya. He stressed the need for innovative and sustainable solutions at the EU level to ensure protection for those who qualify while effectively returning those who do not qualify for asylum to their countries of origin.
The role of the European Union in the Middle East conflict was another topic of discussion, the government statement read. Prime Minister Abela reiterated that, at a European level, efforts must continue towards a two-state solution that guarantees stability and peace. On the situation in Ukraine, he emphasized the need to actively pursue peace while simultaneously planning for the country's reconstruction. He explained that Malta is working on initiatives aimed at revitalizing communities, including social projects.
In light of the recent U.S. election outcome, the Maltese Prime Minister highlighted the importance of strengthening the transatlantic relationship, which remains crucial for global peace and stability, the statement continued.
During his visit to Malta, European Council President-elect António Costa also toured the country's first International Space for Contemporary Art, MICAS, in Floriana, and St. John's Co-Cathedral, accompanied by Prime Minister Robert Abela. Abela wished Costa well in his upcoming role and looks forward to strong cooperation, so that the European Council continues to facilitate important discussions that impact people's lives and provide effective political guidance to address common challenges faced by citizens and businesses.
