On Saturday, November 2, K9 Search and Rescue Malta led a large-scale earthquake simulation exercise at White Rocks, Pembroke, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Malta, Civil Protection Department (K9 Section), St John Rescue Corps, and the Malta Police Force.
This event was designed to strengthen multi-agency cooperation and prepare for high-stakes, real-life emergency scenarios. Such simulations are crucial in honing the rapid response, search, rescue, and extraction capabilities necessary in the event of a natural disaster.
K9 Search and Rescue Malta's skilled volunteers and their K9 companions dedicated extensive training to ensure readiness for this exercise. Each dog undergoes thorough preparation, where they are taught to treat search activities as a game, eagerly locating a hidden person in exchange for a reward. While it feels like play to the dogs, this training could make the difference between life and death in an actual emergency.
K9 Search and Rescue Malta is a fully volunteer-led organization, with all members giving countless hours of their free time to train and maintain their dogs' specialized skills. The organization's mission is to support Malta's emergency services, and exercises like this are essential to ensure that all participants are equipped to respond seamlessly and effectively in real disaster scenarios.
