The year 2025 marks the end of five years of extensive restructuring during which infrastructural projects were carried out and new services were introduced to improve care for the elderly, said the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea on Saturday.

Agius Galea said that the St Vincent de Paul complex is continuing to improve its services in order to provide a better quality of life for the elderly who utilise them. He stated that these investments are designed to not only improve the environment of the residence, but also increase the medical services offered.

"We are expanding with more clinics and introducing modern medical equipment to respond better to the needs of the residents and improve their experience," he said. He remarked that the commitment of San Vincenz de Paul is to continue to offer the highest level of care not only for its residents but also for the elderly referred by the community and from other elderly homes.

The Secretariat said that several wards have been renovated, including projects in St Frances wards 1 and 2, which it added will soon be ready to welcome up to 64 new residents with modern services. It continued that the works to expand the SVP pharmacy will allow more storage for medicines and pharmaceutical supplies, thus reducing dependence on the CPSU while also increasing efficiency in the provision of care.

It said that the complex has strengthened its medical care with new equipment, including ultrasound machines and bone density scanners which have eliminated the waiting lists for this test. In the near future, new cardiac monitors, portable x-ray machines, and state-of-the-art air mattresses will also be introduced to further improve the comfort and care of residents.

The Secretariat referred to the budget speech and spoke of how San Vincenz de Paul will start implementing a dialysis unit with a number of machines which will significantly reduce the burden on Mater Dei. In addition, it continued that a new palliative care department will be set up to provide specialized support to patients and their families. Likewise, with an investment of €2 million, an MRI machine will be introduced that will help reduce waiting lists and provide more effective scans for the elderly.

It concluded that there are also plans to develop a unit for intermediate care, which it commented will be crucial to support the care, recovery and transition of patients from hospital to care at home. The Secretariat said that there is already a pilot project of intermediate care that is underway which, over the last few months, has shown very positive results and satisfaction from both the patients themselves and their relatives.
