Minister for Health and Active Aging, Jo Etienne Abela, announced the initiation of the first phase of the development and regeneration project of the Gozo General Hospital on Monday afternoon.

Minister Jo Etienne Abela explained that in the coming days the first phase of this project, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025, will begin. He further explained that in preparation for this, several elderly patients currently residing in the 'Male Geriatric Ward,' who require long-term care, will be relocated to Dar San Ġużepp in Għajnsielem.

Minister Abela stated that once the relocation is complete, the final phase of geological testing of the land, where the development of a new acute hospital will be, will commence. The hospital will have around 400 beds.

He also mentioned that in the coming days, a call for interest will be issued to rent a building where the hospital’s administration can be temporarily moved until the project is completed, allowing for the necessary demolition and excavation of the hospital to begin.

“This was one of our priorities, and in recent months, intensive and continuous work has been done to ensure the start of this project. This will fulfill another government promise, benefiting Gozo's healthcare system,” concluded Minister Abela.
