Maltese citizens have every right to know how the Labour Government is wasting their money in the energy sector, especially when this sector highlights the incompetence in leadership, the Nationalist Party said Wednesday.

Secrecy in this sector is synonymous with the style adopted by the Labour Party in many areas, a statement signed by spokesman Ryan Callus said.

The contract for the Government to lease generators, in an attempt to ease the energy crisis it itself created due to a total lack of planning, has cost our country €37 million. Now, the

Government is refusing a request made by the Times of Malta under the Freedom of Information Act to explain this expenditure. The Government responded that it is too much work to provide details of the contract, the PN said.

The government of blackouts continues to keep us in the dark and hide what the Maltese and Gozitan people have a right to know, Callus said.

The PN said it insists that the Government must stop hiding how it is spending millions, and in the last hours, the Opposition has submitted a Parliamentary Question for these contracts and related documents to be published.

In the absence of this, what the Labour Government is hiding, the Nationalist Government will reveal when the time comes, the PN said.

The Labour Party replied in a statement, saying that once again, the PN didn’t miss an opportunity to issue a partisan statement basing its arguments on the headline of a newspaper without looking at the detail and added that the PN acted quickly instead of confirming facts in an attempt to win politic points.

It said that this tactic has been observed for a while so much so that the PN has made press conferences based on fake news and upon facts showing that what they said was wrong, go mute.

The Labour Party said that in fact, now that it was explained that Enemalta is not hiding any facts but rather asked for a clarification on which period information is being asked of it, it turns out that once again Bernard Grech’s PR issued a false statement. It said that this keeps in confirming how the PN has no plan for the energy sector apart from quick statements or careless proposals that it ends up trying to hide since they truly reveal what the PN believes.

The Labour Party said that primarily amongst them, was the proposal of liberalising the energy sector which would bring the consequence of raising the bills for the Maltese people as opposed to the Labour government which took on the burden of inflation in the energy sector so that the people will have stable energy bills. It said that simultaneously, Labour government continuously spoke clearly on its plans in the energy sector as it did a few days ago in a detailed meeting with social partners so that it would implement them.

The Labour Party concluded that only those who have been breaking the law for years hide information and those who ignore extensions to avoid publishing audited accounts, amongst others.
