The Labour Party announced Tuesday that is has extended the voting time for its upcoming internal elections.

The elections will be held for the party's deputy leaders for parliamentary/party affairs, president and other internal positions, including for 12 members on the executive.

Since there are not more than two candidates for the top posts, only one election is required - to confirm the single candidate who is contesting (needing 50%+1 of the votes), or to choose between the two candidates on the ballot sheet. If there had been three or more candidates, a first election would have whittled them down to the two obtaining the highest number of votes before a second election established the winner.

In a statement, the PL's electoral commission said that in agreement with the party's administrative and executive committees, voting will not only take place on Friday but it has been extended to Saturday.

Voting will therefore be held between 8pm and 11pm on Friday 13 September at the PL headquarters in Hamrun and Sannat PL club, and on Saturday 14 September at the same places but from 9am to 2pm in Hamrun and from 9am to 1pm in Gozo.

Early voting is open from 9am to 12pm in Hamrun on Saturday 7 September.

The counting of votes will take place as soon as the voting time ends at 2pm.

Foreign Minister Ian Borg is uncontested for the post of deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, while Alex Agius Saliba is uncontested for the other deputy leadership post.

Norma Saliba and Alex Sciberras are contesting the post of President.

Louis Gatt is uncontested for vice-president; Georvin Bugeja and John Grech are contesting to be elected to the post of international secretary and William Lewis is uncontested for the post of organisational secretary.

Thirty-seven candidates are contesting for the 12 places on the party executive.
