The education system is failin

The education system in failing the Maltese students, a statement by the Nationalist Party reads.

While the PN said that it congratulates all students who achieved encouraging marks in the O'Level examinations that were released this week, and encouraged those students who did not get the marks they hoped for to keep working, it expressed concern over the general performance of Maltese students in subjects like English, Maltese, and Mathematics, among others. It called on the government to conduct a thorough analysis to identify the challenges Maltese students are facing in these key subjects, "where worrying trends have been observed year after year."

The PN said that it is evident that the education system is failing Maltese students academically, and despite Malta, according to European Commission reports, having a considerable expenditure on education, the results continue to reveal the unsatisfactory level achieved by Maltese students at the end of their compulsory education. "While the Nationalist Party understands that educational measurement should never be solely based on O'Level results, it recognizes that in a system that depends on O'Level marks, such results are imperative. At the same time, the Nationalist Party acknowledges the importance of continuous assessment in the form of SBAs, which will be included in O'Level marks starting next year, as it believes in the holistic development of students who form themselves throughout the educational journey more than just preparing for final exams."

The PN said it is very worrying that "out of the 4,519 students who sat for English, 1,149 did not achieve a grade between 1 and 5; out of 3,968 who sat for Maltese, 1,218 did not achieve a grade between 1 and 5; while out of 4,622 who sat for Mathematics, 1,838 did not achieve a grade between 1 and 5. The statistics show that in English, Maltese, and Mathematics, it was 70.6%, 64%, and 51.8%, respectively, who achieved a grade between 1 and 5," the party said.

"It is also concerning that subjects like Information Technology and Computing are not attracting enough youths to sit for the O'Level. This statistic confirms that although the academic focus in the Maltese educational system revolves around core subjects, the students' performances are not comparable. This shows that Malta has two fundamental problems: academic, and vocational or applied which is not attracting enough students, and where it does attract, it is not given enough prominence."

The PN said that "no National Strategy and no Sectoral Agreement will address the serious challenges the Maltese system faces unless there is an intervention with practical implementation focusing entirely on the individual to help Maltese children form themselves better. This can only be done if all teachers and educators are given all the resources to operate in the best interests of Maltese children, who from an early age show they are not adapting to a system that continues to treat everyone the same without effective inclusive methods and that differentiates between formal and informal education within the framework of Maltese schools.

The Nationalist Party said that it remains committed to seriously investing in the early years to strengthen the upcoming generation, with an obligation towards every boy and girl, with academic, vocational, or applied inclinations so that everyone forms themselves and is equipped with the most basic skills, including critical thinking, the use of technology and informatics, and effective communication bilingually. For the Nationalist Party, every student can succeed, and every student should succeed."

The PN statement was signed by the party's Shadow Minister for Education Justin Schembri
