Henry and Inez Casolani are the first Maltese lay couple whose diocesan process for their beatification and canonisation cause has been concluded, a statement by the Archdiocese of Malta said Saturday.

The Curia said that the documentation and testimonies collected since 2015 in these two inquiries will now be sent to Rome so that the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints within the Church can examine the information gathered about the holy life and reputation of sanctity of this couple.

The Postulator who coordinated the work on the two causes was Father Josef Sciberras OSA, while the testimonies were collected by members of the Metropolitan Tribunal.

The rite of the conclusion of the inquiries and the thanksgiving Mass, led by Archbishop Charles Scicluna, took place in the Parish Church of Saint Augustine in Valletta, the same church where the Casolanis got married 80 years ago.

In his homily, the Archbishop said that “these walls, which 80 years ago witnessed the consent of the love promise between Henry and Inez Casolani, today also witness an important step in the recognition of all that God did in them and through them. May the Lord choose them as witnesses of His love, as an example of fidelity, humility, and holiness without much fanfare,” he said.

“We thank the Lord for the mercy He showed to Henry and Inez who embraced His call to live the married life and in it found mercy and holiness,” Scicluna said.

He continued that “the Lord is giving us an example,” through them.

“I do not need to tell you how much we need loyal love in marriage, even today. In them, we must salute many other holy married couples that only the Lord knows about,” Scicluna said.

Among the invited guests present for the conclusion of the inquiries were the President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono, the Emeritus Archbishop of Malta Paul Cremona OP, and Sister Cecilia Casolani, daughter of the Casolani couple and today the Superior of the Sagra Familja Home in Żabbar, which is run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition.

Bishop Sandro Overend Rigillo OFM, Emeritus Archbishop George Frendo OP, the Provincial of the Augustinians Father Leslie Gatt OSA, and other priests also attended the mass.
