No agreement was reached Thursday on who should be Floriana’s mayor, as the proposal made by the Labour Party, which obtained a majority of votes in the local council election held last month, was turned down.
The Floriana council is one of five that were deadlocked after the election, as neither of the two major political parties won a majority of seats on the council.
At the end of the counting process, the Labour Party and the Nationalist Party both had two candidates elected, while the fifth seat went to independent candidate Nigel Holland.
In a meeting held Thursday, the Labour Party proposed Sandra Sammut Hili as mayor, but the PN councillors James Aaron Ellul and Justine Palmier voted against the nomination, as did Holland. The other PL councillor, Justin Haber, voted for Sammut Hili for a 2-3 result against her appointment.
This means that another meeting will have to be held next week in the hope that a compromise will be reached.
If the councillors do not come to terms in the vote taken next week, the law allows for the candidate with the highest number of votes from the party which obtained the highest number of votes – in this case Sammut Hili – will be appointed mayor for three months.
This exercise will have to be repeated after every three months during the course of the legislature.
