Alfred Sant has concluded his 10-year stint at the European Parliament, possibly bringing to an end a political career that spanned more than 40 years and which saw him as a main protagonist in the country’s political history.
He has been asked to respond to a series of questions, in writing, about his time in politics, and he gladly accepted, going through the different moments as he experienced them first hand.
He takes us through the 1980s, a time of tribulation in the country following the 1981 electoral result which saw the Labour Party retain government in spite of obtaining fewer votes, and then onto the 1990s when first he became Opposition Leader and later Prime Minister for a mere 22 months.
Sant then speaks about the years leading up to the 2003 European Union membership referendum, the electoral defeat of 2008 which led to his resignation as Labour Party leader, and the last 10 years during which he served as a representative for Malta at the EP.
He gives his insights on the various developments within the Labour Party and in the country, providing anecdotes and sharing little-known information about how he tackled various issues he came face-to-face with in his different roles.
In the next few weeks, The Malta Independent on Sunday will be publishing Sant’s replies. The questions were asked in chronological order, and will be published as such.
The first part of the interview is published here
