Maestro Vinny Vella Sr passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 96, his family said. 

Born in Valletta, Vinny focused his studies on the saxophone and clarinet with Jules Wilson. 

Maestro Vinny Vella Sr will be remembered as one of the leading local musicians with a career spanning from the 1940s up until the early 1990s. 

He was the leading musician and director of his band ‘Vinny’s Blue Jackets’. He performed alongside a number of local and foreign performers such as Albano, Bobby Solo and Wilma De Angelis. He even performed a ball attended by then- Princess Elizabeth, while she lived in Malta. 

His name was synonymous with venues such as Strait Street, The Premier, Phoenicia and Chalet. 

Maestro Vella is survived by his three children, Tania, Carmen and Vinny Jr - who also followed his footsteps and forged his own musical career.
