First step was full employment

The first step towards a better economy was reaching full employment and, now that this has been achieved, the next step is creating jobs of a better quality, Prime Minister Robert Abela said.

Speaking in Mellieha as part of the EP and local council elections campaign, Abela said that under a Nationalist government unemployment had reached high levels.

Things started to change in 2013 and the generation of jobs meant that now the country can move towards another target – that of creating jobs that are of good quality, the PM said.

He said this would mean better salaries and better conditions of work but, even before that, the country needs to invest in education.

What has happened in the country in the last decade showed how wrong it was to close trade schools. This decision is now being reversed, as Maltese young people need to receive the necessary training to be ready for these jobs.

He said that the government has given great incentives to small and medium-sized companies, which the PM said were the foundation of the economy. The decision to keep energy prices stable had also contributed to putting people’s minds at rest.

At the start of his participation, the PM briefly referred to the day’s developments with regard to the Vitals inquiry, saying that the most important thing is that people remain calm in the face of those who want to create a “holy war”.
