Works have have got underway on the Xewkija Park & Ride, and will also include a recreational area.
The project, in the area known as Ta’ Xhajma, will consist of a total of 24,000 square metres of which 12,000 square metres will be dedicated to 300 parking spaces.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, together with the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett visited the ongoing works.
The Gozo Minister said that to reduce heavy traffic and congestion in the Mgarr area, the Ministry for Gozo, through European funds under the SMITHS project, is building a multimodal hub.
He explained that the aim of the project is to regenerate the area and transform it into a parking space for 300 vehicles and dedicated spaces for charging electric vehicles and pedelecs. This centre will also include a terminal building for electric buses.
The Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett said that a project like this fits into the government’s goals, to continue investing in projects in favour of carbon neutrality and green projects.
It was explained that through this project, an existing road will be repaired and tarmacked, there will be pedestrian access and rainwater will be collected and directed into a reservoir. In this project one floor will be built and a green roof will be introduced over the parking area providing an outdoor recreation facility.
The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri concluded by saying that through this project the site will be utilised for the use it was originally intended for.
