Malta has appealed to the EU for a strongly sustained effort in Libya where fighting is still ongoing with the Minister for Foreign Affairs saying this is undermining the battle against the spread of coronavirus and increasing the risk of illegal immigration.
In a virtual meeting between EU Foreign Affairs Ministers and major representative Josep Borrell, there was a discussion on the repatriation of 350,000 persons back to the EU. It is estimated that 250,000 are still stranded worldwide waiting for their repatriation to their EU countries.
Minister Evarist Bartolo referred to the Joint Protection Mechanism which, he said, has to be speeded up to ensure that necessary medical equipment be provided in the shortest time possible.
He also appealed that the Mediterranean operation, IRINI, speedily implements the Resolution by the UN Security Council to smash the net of people trafficking.
