Gennaro Gattuso saw positives and negatives from Milan’s 1-1 draw with Betis, but with Juventus coming up has to “count how many players we have left.”

Suso’s free kick cancelled out an early Giovani Lo Celso strike in Seville for the Europa League result, which puts them in second place alongside Olympiacos, only one point behind Betis.

“It’s good to play well, but there is some bitterness. Our wing-backs were too deep in the first half and never pushed up, so we did better after moving to 3-4-3,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were timorous early on and conceded a goal early through our error, but the lads deserve credit because they fought back and showed character to get a result in a difficult arena.

“Once again tomorrow, we’ll have to count to see how many players we actually have left.”

Mateo Musacchio was stretchered off, having seemingly lost consciousness after colliding with teammate Franck Kessie, while Hakan Calhanoglu went off with an ankle injury.

Gonzalo Higuain, Jack Bonaventura and Davide Calabria are also in doubt for Sunday’s Serie A match with Juventus, with Lucas Biglia and Mattia Caldara long-term absentees.

“I have to wait for what the doctor says, as I am a Coach and not a doctor. There’s no point thinking about it, we’ll play who we’ve got and will wage battle, as looking for alibis will get us nowhere.

“Musacchio’s injury was a collision, but knowing his temperament, he’ll do everything he can to recover and play this weekend. Calhanoglu had the usual knock to the top of the foot. We’ll see.

“Now we’ve got two and a half hours to fly back and do some work on the plane. Juventus are one of the best sides in Europe, let alone Italy, but we won’t sit here crying into our hankies. We’ll face them and play our football.”

Milan moved to a 3-5-2 formation this evening in Seville and it took a while to get into gear.

“Sometimes it’s easier to build from the back with three midfielders, it’s a little tougher with two and we are less fluid with our passing. I saw us passing better in the second half and we gained confidence.

“Having a player like Tiemoue Bakayoko means you don’t always have to play from the back, because he can go up there and knock on a long ball. We had one striker today, Patrick Cutrone, and didn’t give him the right service, but we’re learning with this system and hope to improve it with more experience.

“The easiest thing during this period was to seek alibis, saying we had injuries because we worked too hard or not enough, that the players weren’t following my orders, etc. We resisted that and always work hard, even if I might wind them up.”
