Befana rides into Piazza Navona
We can all do with sweets and coal says Rome mayor
The Befana, the mythical witch who
traditionally brings sweet treats to good children and coal to
naughty ones on Epiphany Day, flew into Rome's iconic Piazza
Navona on a broom set up by the fire brigade on Monday.
The hag who usually delights Italian kids with chocolate and
other dainties, was greeted by, among others, Rome Mayor Roberto
Gualtieri who said "we can all do with some sweetmeats and even
some coal, we can all always do better".
Firefighters 'saved' the Befana form the Borromini terrace on
Sant'Agnese in Agone, the main church in the Roman square that
is filled with festive rides and stands at Christmas and New
year.
