The interior and transport ministries said Friday that road accidents were down by 21% on New Year's Eve 2024/25 with respect to the previous year.
    The ministries linked the drop to widespread, nationwide checks done by 27,200 Highway and Carabinieri police officers.
    Last month a revision of the highway code drafted by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini that, among others things, stiffens the punishments for people who drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs came into force.
