Free Sala, guarantee rights Farnesina tells Iranian amb.
'Dignified detention must be guaranteed'
Italy asked for the immediate release
of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala during a meeting Thursday at
the foreign ministry in Rome summoned by Secretary General
Riccardo Guariglia, at the indication of Deputy Premier and
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, with the Iranian ambassador to
discuss the case of the detained reporter, according to a note
issued after the talks.
The note said Italy first of all asked for the release of the
29-year-old Rome-born Il Foglio freelance correspondent and
Chora News podcaster, who travelled to Iran on a journalist
visa.
Guariglia reiterated the request to ensure dignified conditions
of detention, in the respect of human rights, and to guarantee
full consular assistance to the Italian reporter, allowing
Italy's Embassy in Tehran to visit her and to provide her with
care packages which she has not been allowed to receive so far.
Sala was arrested on December 19 and has been charged with
breaching Islamic law.
She is currently detained in Tehran's Evin prison.
