Record 69 cases of collapse in Italian schools in 12 months
Highest number of incidents in seven years
An unprecedented 69 cases of
structural collapse or falling plaster in Italian schools were
reported between September 2023 and September 2024, citizens'
rights association Cittadinanzattiva said Wednesday.
It was the highest number of incidents on record since
monitoring began seven years ago, the organization said.
Of the total, a reported 28 cases occurred in the South and the
Islands, as well as in the North (40.5%), while 13 occurred in
the Central regions (19%) and in many cases the incidents had
been preceded by visible signs that were underestimated,
according to the association.
The report also noted that a high number of school buildings
don't have a certificate of use and occupancy (59.16%) nor of
fire prevention (57.68%), among others.
