Interior Undersecretary Nicola Molteni said Thursday that the government is set to present an amendment to the security bill being examined by parliament that will introduce the use of body cameras on the uniforms of Italian police officers.
On Wednesday the Lower House's constitutional affairs committee rejected an opposition amendment to bring in identification codes on police uniforms so officers accused of using excessive force can be identified.
Molteni said the aim of bringing in bodycams was to "protect officers of the police forces, who never dodge the truth and transparency and never have.
"Identification codes are an instrument against the police forces," he added.
"I've always been against identification codes on police forces' uniforms because it is a dangerous, damaging instrument that encourages easy, manipulative complaints about the work of our police forces, who deserve recognition and respect".
