Italy's mayors will toast the
government's abolition of the crime of abuse of office after a
justice reform bill is passed on Wednesday, even those who
opposed it for party reasons, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio
said.
"I think that the vast majority of administrators, who may have
voted against (the abolition of abuse of office, ed.) in
deference to party rules, are happy and perhaps when this reform
is approved on Wednesday they will open a bottle of sparkling
wine," he said at a private dinner Saturday of the 'Forum in
masseria', held at Rai state broadcaster veteran star host Bruno
Vespa's estate in Manduria in Puglia.
The bill also contains another major measure that has been
contested by the opposition and magistrates, the separation of
the career paths of judges and prosecuturs so that they can no
longer swap from one role to the other.
