Fuksas staged Tosca delights Caracalla crowd
Singers wow audience on Puccini anniversary, direction less so
A Tosca staged in his opera design
debut by iconic veteran starchitect Massimiliano Fuksas and his
wife Doriana wowed the crowd at Rome's ancient Baths of
Caracalla on Friday night marking the 100th anniversary of
Giacomo Puccini's death.
There was enthusiastic applause for the singers and for the
stage design, but less so for art director Francesco Micheli's
decision to project Latin phrases and images of Anna Magnani in
Rome Open City onto the ancient Roman ruins.
In the lead roles Carmen Giannattasio and Saimir Pirgu garnered
wild acclaim as doomed couple Tosca, the famed singer, and her
anti-clerical painter lover Mario Cavaradossi, as did Claudio
Sgura who made a magnificently threatening evil Church police
chief Scarpia.
