Unions say no to Benetton furl

Trade unions representing Benetton workers said Wednesday that they have rejected a furlough plan proposed by the loss-making Italian clothing group.
    The unions said the company had proposed 'solidarity contracts', a system under which firms in trouble can cut workers' hours rather than making people redundant, for up to 40% of the hours of 375 staff for six months, with the possibility of a further extension.
    They said that they had said no to "such a harmful agreement" in part because "no industrial plan has been presented" to them by the Benetton group.
    The company has said its Ponzano Veneto and Villorba facilities in the province of Treviso will be closed every Friday from July 12 to August 3 and staff will work remotely.
    The company is expected to launch a major restructuring plan after making a loss of around 230 million euros in 2023.
