The winner of the first stage in this year's Giro d'Italia will get a 3D reproduction of a necklace that once adorned Kha, the famed architect of the XVII dynasty of Egyptian Pharaohs, whose mummy is kept in Turin's world-famous Egyptian Museum, organisers said two days ahead of the start of the 107th edition of the world's second biggest grand tour in the northern Italian city on Saturday.
"It will be a special gift from the museum," said the president of the ancient Egyptian foundation, "on the 200th anniversary of its opening".
The first stage of the biggest stage race after the Tour de France and ahead of the Vuelta a Espana will wind its way from the ancient savoy hunting lodge of Venaria Reale to the hill of Superga overlooking Turin, on the 75th anniversary of the Superga Disaster plane crash that wiped out the Grande Torino football team.
The Giro finishes on 26 May in Rome.
There are two individual time trial stages and 4 stages longer than 200 km.
Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar, a two-time Tour de France winner (2020-21), is the pre-race favorite while 2023 Giro runner-up Geraint Thomas, who won the 2018 Tour, returns also.
Both riders have expressed the intention to attempt a Giro-Tour double
