Kerry Gardai praised for assis

Kerry Gardaí were praised after they sprang into action to assist a number of elderly people living remotely during the current freezing temperatures.

The county has been badly hit with the snow this week, with many parts of the county entirely impassable for people who are also without electricity and some essential supplies while weather warnings are in place.

Officers in Kerry have been tirelessly working to help people in need, joining with volunteers from the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team to respond to calls for assistance.

“As you can see, these conditions are a challenge for us to navigate so they would be impossible for someone elderly, frail or vulnerable,” a post on the Garda Facebook page read.

On Wednesday night, Gardaí headed to a rural village outside of Listowel to help a man in his 80s who was living by himself.

“We called out last night to help a lovely man in his 80s living by himself in Knocknagoshel - a rural, isolated village about 15km outside Listowel,” Gardaí shared.

“Alone Ireland had been in touch with us to ask that we check-in with him as he doesn’t have a phone and hadn’t been heard from since the weekend when the weather took a turn.”

In another instance, officers were able to get to an elderly lady living remotely who needed to get to her family during the cold spell.

“We also managed to get to an elderly lady living in a remote area who needed to get to her family so she can be well taken care of during this freezing weather,” the post continued. “Her family had called for our help to get her to their home safely about 50km away.”

Gardaí were quick to assist this week

Gardaí shared that helping neighbours during cold weather is important, especially those who may feel lonely and isolated. They added: “Calling into your neighbours is a very important but simple thing for us all to do and during this hard winter especially.

“Many will feel lonely and isolated while confined to the house due to the snow and ice so it’s important we all band together to make sure everyone is safe and well.

“If you need our assistance in any way or you are concerned for the welfare of someone elderly or vulnerable in your community - please give us a call.”

In another post, Gardaí shared that two officers went above and beyond to help an elderly lady who runs a cat sanctuary in Clare. They wrote: "Garda Yvonne Brady and Garda Michael Haugh from Ennistymon Garda station were contacted about an elderly lady living outside Connolly, Co. Clare who runs An Cat Dubh Cat Sanctuary.

"The sanctuary cares for over 160 cats and because of the weather and very poor road conditions she has been quickly running out of supplies.

"We were more than happy to be able to help with dropping in some litter and cat food as well as some bits for the lady herself. If you or anyone you know need us help or support please call us. "
