Social welfare payment arriving early as schedule change brings bonus forward
Parents in Ireland will receive their February child benefit payments early due to a bank holiday schedule shake-up. The change also coincides with the introduction of a New Baby Grant.
Parents across Ireland are set to receive their next child benefit payment early in a schedule shake-up.
The upcoming St Brigid's Day bank holiday means that banks and post offices will be closed on Monday, February 3. Because of this, any social welfare payment due to be issued on that date will come in early, either on Friday, January 31 or Saturday, February 1.
While it's usually paid on the first Tuesday of every month, in cases where the Monday prior is a bank holiday, the child benefit is usually paid early.
Child benefit is a monthly payment of €140 to the parents or guardians of children under 16. You can also get child benefit for children aged 16, 17 and 18 if they are in full-time education or full-time training, or have a disability and cannot support themselves.

Here are the child benefit payment dates for the remainder of the year, along with the months when an early payment is likely:
- March 4
- April 1
- May 6 (may be paid early due to May Bank Holiday on the 5th).
- June 3 (may be paid early due to June Bank Holiday on the 2nd).
- July 1
- August 5 (may be paid early due to August Bank Holiday on the 4th).
- September 2
- October 7
- November 4
- December 9
This comes after the Department of Social Protection introduced a new grant for parents which started this month, Galway Beo reports. In Budget 2025, it was announced that a New Baby Grant of €280 would be added to the first month of child benefit for:
- Children born on or after December 1, 2024.
- An adopted child placed in your care on or after December 1, 2024.
The grant is paid in conjunction with the child's first child benefit payment, meaning that parents will receive a total of €420 for their new baby - and this bonus is also expected to come in early on either on Friday, January 31 or Saturday, February 1.
New parents who don't have any other children will be sent a form to register for child benefit after they register their child's birth. Meanwhile, parents with existing children who welcome a new baby will automatically have their new child added to their existing child benefit claim and will be notified when they are due to receive child benefit for their new baby.
