Conor McGregor appeared to belittle the League of Ireland by claiming he could buy two of its clubs.

Drogheda United distanced themselves from the MMA fighter on Tuesday after he was pictured with the FAI Cup at his Black Forge Inn pub in Dublin. McGregor's cousin, Warren Davis, was part of the Drogheda squad that won the Cup at the Aviva Stadium back in November.

The former two-weight UFC champion initially congratulated Dundalk rather than Drogheda for winning the trophy before editing his Instagram post. He also wrongly claimed another of his cousins, Keith Buckley, won the Cup with Bohs, but he was part of the side that lost the 2021 final on penalties to St Pat's and missed last year's through injury, which they also lost to their Dublin rivals.

Distancing themselves from McGregor, Drogheda said in a statement: "A social media post has been brought to our attention today regarding the FAI Cup. Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals.

"Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned."

McGregor hit back at the club on Tuesday night, writing on his Instagram story: "For @droghedaunitedfc players, f*** the club, This is for you."

He added: "How much is it to buy a League of Ireland team? I might buy two."

Goals from Andrew Quinn and Douglas James-Taylor secured a first major trophy for Drogheda since they won the League of Ireland in 2007 as they lifted the Cup for just the second time in their history.

The match was attended by 38,723 people, which was a new record for a final involving two clubs from outside Dublin. The victory also secured European football for Drogheda this summer.
