There have been some big Lotto wins in Ireland around the New Year as many approach this time of year with optimism and hope for some good luck.

Some people have a go-to series of numbers they pick every time they play the Lotto, such as birthdays or numbers of personal significance, while others are happy to go with a random set of numbers.

For those looking to pick the most 'overdue' numbers in the hope that they are more likely to come out again soon, the people at LeoVegas have examined the most common and overdue numbers in the Irish Lotto since its structure changed to 47 balls in September 2015.

Interestingly, number 29 is both one of the most frequent numbers historically but also one of the most overdue as it hasn't been drawn in 62 days. The same goes for 27, which appears on both lists as the most common number but not seen in 55 days.

"While it's natural for players to focus on overdue numbers, it's important to understand that each Irish Lotto draw is random," a spokesperson from LeoVegas said.

2. 42 -144 appearances, last drawn on 4 December 2024
3. 29 - 143 appearances, last drawn on 6 November 2024
4. 38 - 139 appearances, last drawn on 18 December 2024
5. 10 - 139 appearances, last drawn on 4 January 2025

Five numbers that are the most overdue:

1. 34: Last drawn on 4 September 2024
2. 3: Last drawn on 26 October 2024
3. 29: Last drawn on 6 November 2024
4. 11: Last drawn on Saturday, 9 November 2024
5. 27: Last drawn on 13 November 2024

"The odds remain the same for each number, regardless of its appearance in previous draws," the LeoVegas spokesperson added, highlighting that the Lotto is a game of chance and "while players may see patterns, these do not guarantee future outcomes."

"The fact that certain numbers have been absent for a while doesn't make them any more likely to be drawn in the next draw.

"The outcome of every draw is independent and driven purely by chance.

"Players should approach the Lotto with fun in mind and be aware that while overdue numbers can spark interest, there is no certainty in their return."
