An investigation has been launched following the discovery of a woman's body in Cork.

The grim discovery was made at a property in Mallow this morning and the Assistant State Pathologist has attended the scene. A post mortem will take place.

It's understood the woman was in her 30s, and sources said there were signs of injuries on the body. A senior investigating officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established.

'Dreadful for the town of Mallow'

Another councillor, Tony O'Shea, told the Irish Mirror that the incident was "dreadful for the town of Mallow", and offered his sympathies to the victim's family following her shocking death.

Fine Gael Councillor Liam Madden described the discovery of the young woman's body as "very tragic" and said the people of Mallow were thinking of her and her family.


"Someone found dead at that age is very tragic and very sad," he said. "We're thinking of her and her family. It's such a bad time of year for something like that to happen."

This is the street where the incident occurred. Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses or motorists with dash-cam footage from this area between 9pm last night and 10am this morning to make contact with investigators.

Town shocked by 'major tragedy'

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes described the death of the woman in Mallow as a "major tragedy" and said the people of the town were shocked by the incident.


"It’s something that you certainly would not expect, it’s a major tragedy," he told the Irish Mirror. "It’s a shock to everyone… Mallow is lovely town and something like this is unheard of and unprecedented."


Victim suffered stab injuries

The 31-year-old victim is understood to have suffered stab injuries. Gardaí are poised to launch a murder investigation but are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.

It is understood that the 31 year old woman is originally from Kinsale in Co Cork and moved to Mallow within the last year.

Gardaí in Mallow are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in her 30s following the discovery of a body at a residential property in Bridewell Lane, Mallow, Co. Cork this morning Friday 3rd January, 2025.

The Assistant State Pathologist, Dr. Margot Bolster has attended the scene of the incident and the body of the deceased will be removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

A senior investigating officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Mallow Garda Station. A family liaison officer (FLO) has also been assigned to provide support to the family.

The Garda Technical Bureau has been requested to attend the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them and are seeking any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Bridewell Lane, Mallow, Co. Cork between 9pm last night Thursday 2nd January and this morning Friday 3rd January, 2025 at 10am.
