Why people avoiding doing laundry on New Year's Day
There are a number of superstitions that say you shouldn't do laundry on January 1 - and they are pretty grim
Some people believe it's unlucky to leave up your Christmas decorations after Twelfth Night (January 5), but what about doing the washing?
It turns out there're a fair few superstitions tied to laundry on New Year's Day, and none are too cheery, to say the least. Folklore would have you believe that doing laundry on January 1 could rinse out the good vibes for the rest of the year, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Worse yet, some reckon a family member might be 'washed away' - pass away, that is - within the coming months. The origins of this odd belief aren't crystal clear, but it seems plenty do abide by it, with some even dodging the washing up for fear the myth might come true.

A mum from Manchester reported she stumbled across the notion thanks to a chat on a Mrs Hinch fan page online, saying: "I'd never heard of it but it was on a discussion on a Mrs Hinch page on Facebook," and making it clear she's not risking it: "I'm 100% following it and there will definitely no washing in my house."
But laundry’s just the start when it comes to New Year quirks. For instance, getting rid of anything outta your home, including rubbish, is said to be a no-no on New Year’s Day.
Supposedly it could prevent any wealth from straying from your house. And superstitions regarding food abound, with pork seen as lucky as swine shove forward while scavenging – suggesting progress. On the flip side, lobster or crab could be bad news because they scuttle sideways.
