Ireland Weather: Irish New Year's Eve revellers cursed by devastating new array of Met Eireann warnings
Ireland Weather: Irish New Yea

Met Eireann has issued a fresh set of Status Yellow weather warnings as widespread spells of heavy rain look set to put a dampener on Ireland's New Year's Eve celebrations.

According to the national forecaster, New Year's Eve will be a rather windy day with widespread rain at first, with heavy showers expected in the evening while some falls of sleet and snow may occur also.

Ahead of the arrival of the adverse weather conditions, a rare, full 24-hour weather alert has now been issued for Cork and Kerry, with Met Eireann warning that persistent rain on New Year's Eve could lead to localised flooding and hazardous travelling conditions.

That Status Yellow - Rain warning will come into effect at 6am on Tuesday and will remain in place until 6am on Wednesday.

Met Eireann has already issued a Status Yellow - Wind warning for Donegal, Galway, and Mayo, which will kick in at midnight on Tuesday and will run until 11am on Tuesday. These counties can expect strong to gale force and gusty southwest winds during this period.

Some possible impacts include: fallen branches/trees, debris, loose objects displaced, difficult travelling conditions, wave overtopping due to onshore winds and high seas, particularly during high tide times.

The national forecaster previously issued a Status Yellow - Rain alert for Donegal, warning of spells of rain, heavy at times from 11am on Monday until 11am on Tuesday. Possible impacts include: localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility.

According to Met Eireann's latest forecast, rain will become confined to Munster and south Leinster on New Year's Eve, with sunny spells and isolated showers elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 9C to 12C are expected in fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds, easing during the evening.

Rain in the southwest will continue to extend northeastwards overnight, heavy in places, with spot flooding possible. Met Eireann has said that more showery conditions are likely in the north, while there is the chance of strong winds in the south but they may stay off shore.

The wet and windy conditions will give way to freezing temperatures later in the week, with temperatures set to plummet as low as -6C on Thursday.

It is expected to be very cold, largely dry and bright for the following few days with widespread frosts developing during the nights, stubborn to clear some areas during the days. There'll be well scattered wintry showers too, mainly in northern and some western parts, while some fog and freezing fog will develop by night too.
