Shock as World Champion boxer

World champion boxer Paul Bamba has passed away aged 35.

Bamba became WBA Gold Cruiserweight world champion last weekend by beating Rogelio Medina in New Jersey. The victory was his 14th by knockout in 2024, breaking a record set by legendary heavyweight Mike Tyson. The American, who was born in Puerto Rico, held a 19-3 record over the course of his career and had called out Jake Paul after beating Medina.

But just six days later he has been found dead.

Bamba was represented by American popstar Ne-Yo, who recently set up a boxing management venture, and his passing has caused profound shock in the American boxing community.

Confirming the tragic news, Ne-Yo and Bamba's family released a joint statement which read: "It is with profound sorrow that we announced the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives.

"He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination.

"We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief."

Bamba, who was coached by Malik Scott - the husband of CBS Sports presenter Kate Abdo - had been due to fight Tommy Fury in November 2022, only for the bout to be cancelled.

He had been extremely busy in 2024, fighting a bout in every month with the exception of September, sometimes taking on more than one opponent in a month.

Posting on Instagram on Christmas Day, Bamba wrote: "This year I set out with a goal. I did just that! Wasn’t easy there were many obstacles that I adapted to overcame and kept on the path we set regardless of extenuating circumstances. 14 fights.

"14 knockouts ending with the WBA GOLD cruiserweight world title. Blessed to have my family my team and all my supporters along the way. That being said if you got what some might call an 'outlandish goal' GO chase it. Anyone who thinks that isn’t as brave as you, prove people wrong!"

After his recent win, Ne-Yo wrote on Instagram: "Last night PAUL BAMBA made history! Breaking Mike Tyson’s record, 14 fights in one year ALL RESULTING IN KNOCKOUTS!

"Ending the year with a cruiser weight WORLD TITLE!! And the best is yet to come. Congrats my guy!! Honored to be your manager. Let’s keep going!!!"
