Roy Keane appears to have quite the history with Manchester United Christmas parties. The Cork native spent 12 years at Old Trafford and had his fair share of nights out with teammates in that time.

Keane previously told how Alex Ferguson banned him from attending a Christmas party while at United. The former Republic of Ireland captain had enjoyed a night out with the club's reserves when in his own words a “bit of bother” occurred in Manchester city centre, which legendary manager Ferguson heard of.

That prompted Ferguson to tell the other first-team players not to go anywhere near Keane on their festive booze-up. Keane told funny tale on The Overlap’s Stick to Football, which is sponsored by Sky Bet, with Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Jill Scott.

“Remember when I got banned from the Christmas do at United once?,” Keane said to Neville. “There were two dos. I might have been injured. The reserves were having a night out. I went out with the reserves and there must have been a bit of bother in Manchester or something. Obviously, I was trying to be the peacemaker.

“The first-team lads were going out one or two days later. Ferguson came in, in front of everyone, and said anyone seen drinking with me that day would be fined. So I wasn’t allowed to go to the Christmas do.”

Seemingly unaware of the incident in the question, Neville asked: “When was this?” Keane replied: “Christmas,” prompting laughter from the fellow guests.

The former Sunderland and Ipswich manager then added: “I ended up having a Christmas do by myself.” After leaving Wright shocked by his one-man party revelation, Keane added: “I went out by myself. I went round Altrincham, I had a great day.”

Keane had a distant relationship with Ferguson, revealing recently he never allowed himself to get close to any of his managers. He said on Sky Sports earlier this month: "That was never for me. I never believed in being 'pally' or close to any of the managers I worked with.

"[I] never had a bond there [with Ferguson], absolutely not. People like to believe that we had a good relationship, I probably had two or three private conversations with the manager during my time at the club."

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand this week claimed Wes Brown once angered Keane during a booze-fuelled Christmas party before getting so drunk that he had to be carried out.

Ferdinand recalled the eventful evening when Brown had one too many while United had been enjoying a festive party - but his antics went a little too far as he irked Keane during the celebration in Manchester.

The former centre-back was described as a "funny drinker" by Ferdinand, who claimed Keane became riled up after Brown attempted to give the Irishman more drinks.

Speaking on his podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents, he said: "Wes Brown got carried out at midnight, or just before midnight. We were doing all day at a Christmas do and he got carried out. I'll never forget [it].

"Wes was a funny drinker. I remember Roy Keane stopped drinking and we were out somewhere in Manchester and Wes kept trying to feed Roy a drink.

"You know Roy, he was like 'one more and I am going to put that over your head in a minute', that type of thing. Wes had to get told to move out the way. That's the problem with footballers and alcohol, it always goes wrong."
