The Euro 2024 final surpassed the Late Late Toy Show as the most-streamed television event of the year, according to Eir’s end-of-year data.

While the hit RTÉ show is one of the biggest nights for Irish television, Spain vs England on July 14 was more popular for Eir TV users. The Late Late Toy Show was the second-most-watched show of the year. At its peak, it accounted for 64 per cent of Eir vieweship, which is down 18 per cent from last year.

Sporting fixtures accounted for eight of the 10 most-watched listings of the year, with the Paris Olympics taking two of these spots. The Euro 2024 final was also the busiest day for mobile data in Ireland.

The data also shows that two events attracted many visitors from outside the country. Dublin Pride on July 13 and Kerry vs Armagh in Croke Park on the same day were the busiest days for roaming customers.

When it came to sport, football proved to be the nation’s preferred choice, with soccer fans driving higher data usage and phone call activity compared to rugby supporters. The August Bank Holiday appeared to be the most popular time for Irish people going abroad on holidays as it was the busiest time for outbound roaming.

July and August recorded the highest overall data usage, while May and January saw peaks in voice call activity. Irish people continue to up their online usage year on year, as total broadband usage increased by 7.3 per cent compared to last year.

People in Ireland are also upgrading their technology as high-speed fibre broadband saw a 38 per cent jump in 2024. November 2 was the busiest day for broadband usage as a Fortnite update was released. Gaming remains one of the biggest traffic drivers.

The lowest day of data usage was May 10. Despite many people working from home, Sunday was the highest day on average for fixed broadband usage.

While Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour in the Aviva Stadium dominated headlines this summer, NFL fans used more data when 47,000 spectators ascended into the stadium for one match. Swifties were engrossed across the three nights she played in Dublin as Pink fans made more phone calls than Taylor Swift’s audience during their respective summer performances.

Eir’s Chief Technology Officer Fergal McCann said the report shows that Irish people “fully embraced” technology in 2024, both in their homes and at major events.

He added: “Our ‘2024 Year in Data’ report highlights a clear shift towards more connected, data-driven lifestyles, with a remarkable 38 per cent rise in Fibre to the Home traffic.

"This growth reflects the increasing demand for faster, more reliable internet as households, businesses, and communities rely on high-speed connectivity for everything from smart devices in their home to gaming.”
