The chief person of interest in the suspected murder of Kyran Durnin had booked a ferry ticket to flee Ireland after she was questioned and released without charge by Gardai.

It is understood she planned to go from Dublin to Holyhead last Saturday but couldn't since the Welsh port is closed because of damage caused by Storm Darragh.

The woman had been staying in the East Anglia area of England since she left the country a few months ago. But she was picked up by the Gardai on her unexpected return for a pre-Christmas home visit 10 days ago.

She was questioned for 24 hours at Balbriggan Garda Station before being freed. She has since remained with a relative in the Drogheda area where she spent a day earlier this week putting up a Christmas tree.

The woman was seen walking around downtown Drogheda last weekend and it is now believed she is staying in the area for Christmas.

A Garda source said the woman had initially told them she last saw Kyran when she left a house in Drogheda on August 29 last and he was sleeping on the coach. But she later changed her story and admitted that she hadn't seen the child for over two years.

She gave a partial explanation of what she believed happened to him during a Garda interview but laid the blame for his disappearance and murder on her friend Anthony Maguire who was also questioned and later took his own life earlier this week.

The Garda source said; "She blamed Anthony for everything that happened. We accept he was involved but we do not believe that he killed Kyran.

"We are investigating a murder but we still can not rule out that the child's death was an accident. We believe he died sometime in the weeks after May, 2022.If and when we find his body we will get a lot of answers."

Garda say there are a number of other suspects who have yet to be arrested. They also intend to continue more searches for the youngsters but are refusing to say if and when if and when it will happen.

Gardai are adamant the tragic death of Anthony Maguire will not stop them from getting to the truth.
