Majority of Ireland braced for 600km of snow at Christmas as weather maps turn purple
New weather maps suggest the potential for widespread wintry showers and even snow, only days before Christmas
Weather buffs brace yourselves - newly released maps hint at a proper winter wonderland days before Christmas. The charts from WXCharts.com showed swathes of purple, indicating a decent chance of snow showers across Ireland and swathes of the UK.
While forecasting weather more than a fortnight in advance isn't always reliable, experts believe there's a real chance of snow covering large parts of the country.
A detailed analysis of Sunday's data points to snow potentially carpeting areas from Co Donegal all the way down to parts of Co Cork come Sunday, December 22.

It's still up in the air how much snow might fall or how long it'll stick around, though. As Saturday, December 21 rolls around, temperatures are poised to plummet, with some spots facing bone-chilling lows of -3C and below. As for Met Eireann, they're keeping tight-lipped about their long-range weather forecast but have flagged "unsettled conditions" between Monday, December 16, and Sunday, December 22.
"Current indications are for more unsettled conditions to take hold during Forecast Week 2 as Low Pressure becomes more prevalent," Met Eireann said, predicting wetter than average weather and temperatures hovering around typical December averages.
Met Eireann's forecast promises a "generally dry" spell with the chance of frost, ice and fog hitting the island. Wrap up warm, as temperatures are expected to nosedive to as low as -3C.
The chill factor is about to get real with added wind-chill, making it feel even colder.
Met Eireann outlook for the week
Thursday: Frost and fog will stubbornly persist in places all day long. It remains settled and serene, though generally grey-skied.
Stay snug with highs of just 2C to 7C, once more feeling the coldest out west near the Atlantic. Overnight sees a scattering of infrequent showers.
Fog or mist may occur here and there, coupled with frost in clearer areas. Expect the thermometers to show -2C to 2C through the night.
Friday: Expect a largely dry day with some bright or sunny intervals. There will be a few scattered showers, primarily in the southeast regions, and later across the west and northwest.
The mercury will range from 3C to 8C, with Ulster being the coldest. A light to moderate westerly wind will set in.
