Matt Lucas abused on way to football as he's told club 'doesn't want disgusting gay fans'
Arsenal fan Matt Lucas opened up about experiencing homophobic abuse while trying to support his team
Matt Lucas, 50, has opened up about experiencing horrible abuse as a football fan.
The Little Britain star is famously an avid supporter of Arsenal, but shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he’d been verbally assaulted twice while heading to games this season alone. Matt shared that the abuse was homophobic, with Matt being openly gay.
“I have been verbally abused twice on the way to football matches so far this season. On both occasions I was minding my own business, head down, walking to the ground,” he wrote on Wednesday.
“I was called 'a f**king queer c**t' by one man and another told me that 'our club doesn't want disgusting gay fans'. If you're a player and that offends you less than wearing a rainbow-coloured armband for a couple of matches, then maybe you're part of the problem.”
In the comment section, Matt took the time to respond to a couple of followers who suggested that he was making the homophobia seem more prolific than it was.
One fan wrote: “I'm not denying it happened.. but I've been going to Arsenal for 40 years and never heard anything remotely homophobic.. the stadium has a big banner saying 'Gay Gooners' and nobody seems to mind. You sure it wasn't away fans winding you up? And are you sure rainbows will fix it?” Matt replied succinctly, simply writing: “Good for you.”
The Great British Bake Off presenter is openly gay, and previously said that he first suspected that he was homosexual at around the age of seven. Matt is fairly private about his personal life, but suffered with the loss of his first major partner. Back in 2002, he met TV producer Kevin McGee, who worked with Matt on a few of his shows including The Real Little Britain, Jump Britain and The Morning After Show.
The two quickly fell in love, and made things official when they tied the knot in December 2006 in a civil partnership. The London ceremony boasted celebrity guests including Sir Elton John, the late Paul O'Grady, and Courtney Love.
Unfortunately, the couple’s relationship wasn’t meant to be, and they had their partnership dissolved at the High Court just 18 months later in 2008.
Soon after the couple's split, Kevin tragically passed away after battling depression and a drug addiction. The TV producer was found dead at his Edinburgh flat in October 2009.
To mark the 10th anniversary of Kevin's death, shared on social media in 2019: "I loved him more than anyone I’ve ever met, and still do. He was so funny and silly and clever and kind and handsome, and his smile made my heart soar."
He added: "We were together for nearly six years and he made me the happiest man on the planet. In the end, he lost his battle with addiction and depression. I guess some people don’t have the armour for this world. I think of him probably a hundred times a day, every day. In truth, I think of little else.”
