Brentford could add to their Irish contingent next year - with Wexford’s highly-rated defender Kaylem Harnett heading to the Premier League club on December 11 for a week-long trial.

The Bees have been keeping a close eye on the right-back ever since his breakthrough in 2023, and his rise through the international underage ranks.

Harnett, the Ireland Under-15 Player of the Year in 2022, was on a three-strong shortlist for the Under-17 gong this time around but was pipped by Chelsea prospect Harry McGlinchey.

At club level, after making one senior league appearance in 2023, he played 30 games for the first-team last season and scored four goals.

Brentford have had some joy in recent years recruiting from the League of Ireland, with Conor McManus and Val Adedokun arriving from Bray Wanderers and Dundalk respectively.

Their most high-profile capture in that time was Chiedozie Ogbene from Limerick in January 2018. He made nine first-team appearances there before moving to Rotherham.

Harnett is half-way through a two-year contract that he signed at Wexford last December, while he cannot move to the UK until after his 18th birthday in May.

But his upcoming trial is a chance for the teenager to shine and follow other former League of Ireland prospects to the Premier League side.
