Ruben Amorim considers 'next Harry Kane' as Man Utd's Viktor Gyokeres transfer alternative
Manchester United are among the clubs interested in Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap but could face competition from Chelsea if they move for the youngster rather than Viktor Gyokeres
Manchester United are among the clubs tracking Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
The young forward has produced a series of impressive displays for the Tractor Boys in his debut season in the Premier League. Delap has found the net six times in 12 games despite Ipswich's struggles after netting eight times in 31 appearances in the Championship for Hull in 2023/24.
Amorim was afforded the opportunity to watch Delap up close during his first match in charge of the Red Devils. The young forward failed to score in the Premier League stalemate but impressed against United's backline.
Despite only moving to Portman Road from Manchester City in the summer in a £20million deal, Delap has already garnered a number of suitors. If United follow up in their interest, they could yet face competition from Chelsea with an expectation of a move to one of the Premier League's top sides, per the Athletic.
Delap has garnered a great deal of praise in his short time in the top flight. The 21-year-old has even been tipped for a successful England career.
The former City youngster has featured in every England age-group side from under-16 to under-21s but is yet to make his senior bow. Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy reckons he could establish himself as successor to Harry Kane.
“I've seen him quite a lot this season and I'd probably go as far to say that for me he's the obvious long-term successor to Kane," said Murphy.
“I think he's the best young English striker out there. I know he's got a bit to learn and wisdom comes with experience and game time in this league but he's got all the attributes to be a top international player.
“I just don't see a weakness for him. He's scored enough goals in a struggling side. He gets a lot of chances he'll score more. He's just got that lovely balance between physical and technical, rarely you get both; he's a super talent.”
United have widely been linked to securing a forward for new boss Amorim, despite hopes he can unleash Rasmus Hojlund. The Denmark international got off to a promising start under Amorim with a brace in the Europa League and will hope to continue such form.
Links to Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres have been unavoidable since Amorim's arrival however. The Swede is said to have his heart set on a move to Old Trafford to work with Amorim, who he found so much success under in Portugal.
United are keeping their options open however. Omar Marmoush, Victor Osimhen, Randal Kolo Muani and Victor Boniface are all said to have been shortlisted for consideration in January.
