'Life can change in an instant': Fundraiser launched to get husband beloved home after 'life-altering accident'
Janet James has organised a GoFundMe for her husband Karl after he suffered a devastating fall that left him paralysed in late February
A fundraiser launched by the wife of man seeking to help bring her husband home from hospital after a life-altering accident earlier this year has seen massive support from the public.
In February, Janet James’ husband Karl suffered a severe spinal injury after experiencing a devastating fall that left him paralysed.
Thankfully, in March, Karl was able to undergo critical neck surgery that saved the mobility in his arms and has since has been undergoing his long road to recovery, with his determination and hard work in therapy being hailed as inspiring.

With each passing month, Karl has been gaining more and more strength back in his fingers, arms and hands, and is now able to eat and drink by himself.
Janet is now in the process of building an accessible bedroom in their home to accommodate the necessary medical equipment for Karl which will allow him to return to his home and provide comfort as he recovers.
With renovations underway, and a significant portion of the costs already covered, a GoFundMe has been launched to help adapt the house with ramps, modifying essential areas and widening doorways.
“My name is Janet, and I’m reaching out to ask for your support in bringing my husband, Karl, back home after a life-altering accident earlier this year,” a post on the GoFundMe read.
“Life can change in an instant. For our family, that moment came when my husband suffered a severe spinal injury. In late February, Karl suffered a devastating fall that left him paralysed. In March, he underwent critical neck surgery that saved the mobility in his arms. Since then, his determination and hard work with his incredible physical and occupational therapy team have been nothing short of inspiring.
“Each month, he gains more strength in his upper arms, hands, and fingers. With some adaptations, he’s now able to drink and feed himself. His positive attitude continues to be our beacon of hope.
“To accommodate Karl’s needs and the necessary medical equipment, we’re in the process of building an accessible bedroom in our home. This space will not only allow him to return home but also provide the comfort and accessibility he needs for his continued recovery.
“While we are focused on his recovery, we are also faced with a pressing challenge: ensuring that our home is a safe and accessible space for him when he returns. We began renovations to adapt our house—installing ramps, widening doorways, and modifying essential areas like the kitchen.
“We’ve managed to cover a significant portion of the building costs, but we find ourselves €3,000 short of the full amount needed to complete the project. As I’m currently undergoing cancer treatment myself, our resources are stretched thin.
“We’re humbly asking for your assistance to help us reach our goal. Any contribution, no matter how small, will bring us one step closer to reuniting our family under one roof and moving toward a brighter 2025. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness and support.”
So far the GoFundMe has raised €1,605 of the €3,000 target. To donate to help get Karl home, click the link here.
