Premier League's hardest-working players as Kai Havertz's Arsenal evolution even clearer
The age of the high press in the Premier League has increased the importance of fitness and led to some eye-catching numbers for distance covered so far this season
“There is no substitute for hard work” is a quote attributed to Thomas Edison, but it is likely repeated weekly by Premier League managers trying to inspire their players.
Running around a lot and giving it your all are the bare minimum requirements for footballers and the age of high-pressing has only increased the demands on players. Premier League stars have to be ridiculously fit in order to keep up with the relentless fixture schedule.
After 11 matches, there are already some stand-out performers in terms of distance covered. As expected, the field is dominated by midfielders, who have to get around the pitch the most, and those who have played the vast majority of minutes available so far.
There are also a lot of fan-favourites included, showing that charging around is appreciated by supporters in the stands. So, without further ado, here are the top five runners from the Premier League season so far.
5. Flynn Downes and Youri Tielemans (116.5km)
There is a tie for fifth place between Southampton's hardest-working midfielder and Aston Villa’s Duracell bunny.
Downes has become a much-loved presence for Saints since joining on an initial loan deal from West Ham while they were in the Championship and has continued to perform in the Premier League – even if they have struggled collectively. He was a big miss when they were beaten 2-0 at Wolves before the international break – and that absence makes his numbers all the more impressive.
Tielemans is a good fit for Unai Emery ’s demanding approach at Villa and his physical fitness is needed, given the club’s involvement in the Champions League.
4. Dejan Kulusevski (118km)
The Tottenham star has recorded some impressive numbers, having started 10 of their 11 league games so far. The Sweden international has moved infield this season under Ange Postecoglou, turning from an inverted winger to a central creative presence and pressing machine. He has two goals and two assists in the Premier League as reward for his graft.
3. Lewis Cook (119.3km)
Cook injured his ACL back in 2021, so it is refreshing to see him back playing regularly – and impressively – for Bournemouth, who have taken some big scalps under Andoni Iraola this season. He has started all 11 of the Cherries’ league matches this season, chipping in with three assists and a goal from central midfield. If he keeps it up, the 27-year-old could be pushing England for recognition.
2. Kai Havertz (122.6km)
For a player that arrived at Arsenal from rivals Chelsea not long ago, Havertz has done a remarkable job at earning the adulation of the Emirates Stadium crowd so quickly. The Germany international famously arrived for £65million as a striker, but has played as a central midfielder and withdrawn No.9. Wherever he plays, he puts in a lot of effort for his side, pressing opponents and running around to find space when they have the ball.
1. Bruno Guimaraes (122.8km)
The Newcastle midfielder just edges out Havertz to take top spot by a mere 200 metres. The Brazilian is another fan-favourite, earning the love of the Geordies through his tenacious ball-winning ability, passing talent and his passion. Guimaraes is an absolute pest to play against and tries his best to get up the pitch to support attacks, adding to his distance covered. Can he keep hold of top spot over 38 games? We shall see.
