Ireland weather: Major snow up

Ireland is braced for a sudden weather U-turn, as a major cold snap looks set to replace the mild temperatures we have enjoyed lately. Met Eireann has confirmed that conditions will turn cooler from this weekend - however it's the following week when Ireland could experience its first serious taste of wintry weather.

Long-range weather models - which are notoriously subject to change this far in advance - are suggesting the possibility of snow across much of the country throughout next week. Their forecasts indicate that the first flurries could begin in the northwest on Sunday, November 17, and gradually spread to other areas in the days that follow, before clearing by next Friday, November 23.

In addition to possible snow, temperatures are projected to plummet significantly, with weather maps showing some areas possibly reaching lows of -5C. Next Wednesday, November 20, stands out as a particularly cold day, with the models currently predicting thermometers possibly hovering at -5C until midday.

However, it is important to approach these early forecasts with caution. The national forecaster has previously explained that while they "can at times provide an insight into weather patterns in the months ahead, they should not be used for specific planning purposes as they have generally low skill, because forecasts beyond one week become increasingly uncertain due to the chaotic nature of the atmosphere".

Despite this uncertainty, it does appear that Ireland is at risk of a significant cold spell next week, however at this stage, weather experts can't pinpoint its exact severity or extent.

Met Eireann has given its verdict, saying "confidence is lower" in the forecast for next week, however "mean air temperatures look to drop below average in parts of east Munster and south Leinster, with all other areas likely to see normal temperatures for the time of year."

Ireland is currently experiencing a taste of cooler conditions. Overnight temperatures fell below freezing in parts, and a Status Yellow weather warning for fog is in place for every county except Kerry. The alert reads: "Widespread mist and fog, thickening and becoming dense in places. Potential impacts include poor visibility and hazardous travelling conditions." It is in place until 10am.
