David Coote: Premier League take major action after alleged foul-mouthed Jurgen Klopp rant
A video of Premier League referee David Coote appearing to call Liverpool 's***' and describing former manager Jurgen Klopp as a 'German c***' went viral on social media on Monday afternoon
The PGMOL have confirmed that Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect.
It follows the emergence of a video on social media in which the 42-year-old official appeared to call Liverpool 's***' and described former manager Jurgen Klopp as a 'German c***'.
"David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation," a statement read. "PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete."
The video in question was seemingly filmed several years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic. On Monday, it was posted on X (formerly Twitter ) with Coote talking to a man while sitting on a sofa.
Soon after it gained traction on social media, the PGMOL - the organisation in charge of the Premier League's referees and match officials - launched an investigation. The probe remains in its early stages.
Mirror Football have contacted Liverpool for comment while Football Association have have opened a separate investigation.
The video was seemingly filmed shortly after a Liverpool game, with the other man asking Coote: "What did you think of the Liverpool game earlier?" In response, the referee said: "Liverpool were s***." The other man then asked: "What do you think of Jurgen Klopp?" To which Coote replied: "C***. Absolute c***.
Aside from having a right pop at me when I refereed them againstBurnleyin lockdown, he accused me of lying then had a right f****** pop at me. I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f****** arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner's alright.
Referring to a second match - when Aston Villa beat Liverpool 7-2 in October 2020 - in which he was acting as fourth official, he continued: "You can see me there [in a picture on his phone] with a mask on. Got to careful right, we're social distancing, we're two metres apart. But my God, German c***. F*** me."
In a second video, Coote pleaded with the person who received the message to keep his X-rated comments private. "Just to be clear, that f****** last video can't go anywhere. Seriously," Coote urged.
The Nottinghamshire-born official has been refereeing Premier League matches since 2018. Before his promotion, Coote refereed in the EFL for eight years.
