David Coote has already been suspended by PGMOL as X-rated video of Liverpool remarks emerges
David Coote has been suspended by the PGMOL after an apparent video of him swearing and ranting about Liverpool emerged, but it's not the first time he has been investigated
It's not the first time Premier League official David Coote has been the subject of an investigation by the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL).
Coote, 42, has been suspended with immediate effect after a video of him allegedly calling Liverpool "s***" and former boss Jurgen Klopp "a German c***" was uploaded to Twitter. The video, which looks to have been filmed during the Covid-19 pandemic, was leaked and spread on social media.
The PGMOL confirmed his suspension and that it will be fully investigating the matter. However, it's the second time Coote has been subject to an inquiry from the referees and officials organisation.
The Nottinghamshire referee was one of two match officials to be investigated as part of a probe into separate cases of alleged misconduct, all the way back in 2017.
Coote was suspended for several months during the 2017-18 campaign. At the time, he had not taken charge of a Premier League match and mainly oversaw Championship games.
He remained on the Select Group 2 List, which is the group of referees who were just below the Premier League, but was not allocated a match for the opening weeks of the new season. It was initially claimed that he was injured, but Mirror Football revealed that the PGMOL were still investigating him at the time.
The nature of the allegations against him were not made public by the PGMOL. However, they were understood to be related to a previous role he had with a local football association.
A few months after the investigation into him was launched, Coote would be quietly re-introduced back into football by the PGMOL. The following season, he was promoted to the Premier League.
Six years after the investigation into him, Coote has been suspended from officiating following the video that was posted. Announcing the investigation, the PGMOL released a statement that said: "David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete."
The video appears to be Coote speaking to another football fan about Klopp and Liverpool. The fan asks him: "What did you think of the Liverpool game earlier?" to which the person who appears to be Coote replies: "Liverpool were s***."
The fan then asks about Klopp, to which Coote appears to reply: "C***. Absolute c***. Aside from having a right pop at me when I refereed them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying, then had a right f****** pop at me.
"I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f****** arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner's all right. You can see me there [in a picture on his phone] with a mask on. Got to careful right, we're social distancing, we're two metres apart. But my God, German c***. F*** me."
At the end of the video, Coote appears to reach out to the person the video was being sent to and says: "Just to be clear, that f****** last video can't go anywhere. Seriously."
