Saoirse Ronan's first film to earn her an Oscar nomination is now available to stream for free
Saoirse Ronan has received several Best Actress Oscar nominations, but it was her role in Atonement when she was just 13 years old that led to her first nod from the Academy.
Saoirse Ronan has truly made a mark over the years, bagging herself Best Actress Oscar nods for her stunning performances in Brooklyn (2015), Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019).
The talented actress hasn't stopped there, as she wowed audiences again with her latest stints in the 2024 movies The Outrun and the Steve McQueen-directed Blitz.
At just 30, Saoirse has featured in some of cinema's most famous titles like Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel and the suspense-filled The Lovely Bones. But rewind back to when she was only 13, it was Atonement in 2007 that first got her mingling with the Oscars crowd, securing a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
That role, where she played a savvy teen in the Joe Wright-directed romantic war drama based on Ian McEwan's renowned novel, propelled her into the spotlight.
Alongside heavy hitters like James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Romola Garai, and Vanessa Redgrave, Atonement's tale weaves through a staggering six decades from the 1930s and has been leaving audiences teary-eyed ever since, reports the Irish Star.
With an 83% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a hearty audience score of 80%, it's a critical darling.
The film's synopsis reads: "This sweeping English drama, based on the book by Ian McEwan, follows the lives of young lovers Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy).
"When the couple are torn apart by a lie constructed by Cecilia's jealous younger sister, Briony (Saoirse Ronan), all three of them must deal with the consequences.
"Robbie is the hardest hit, since Briony's deception results in his imprisonment, but hope for Cecilia and her beau increases when their paths cross during World War II."
The Critics Consensus from the website adds: "Atonement features strong performances, brilliant cinematography, and a unique score. Featuring deft performances from James MacAvoy and Keira Knightley, it's a successful adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel."
