England boss Lee Carsley backed for Premier League job after Thomas Tuchel arrival
Lee Carsley remains highly regarded despite being overlooked for the England senior job, with the Irishman now being backed to move to the Premier League once his stint with the Three Lions ends
Lee Carsley has been backed to replace Thomas Frank at Brentford if the Dane ever left his role at the Bees.
Carsley has spent the past few months in interim charge of the England national team. He has led the Three Lions to three wins in his four games, though the final match saw his side suffer a dismal defeat at home to Greece.
His caretaker stint will end in January when Thomas Tuchel takes over as England boss. Carsley will shift back into his role as England's Under 21s head coach, who he first took charge of in 2021.
The Irishman is highly regarded by the FA, even though they have overlooked him for the senior job. But the governing body have now been warned they could lose him by Watford legend Troy Deeney.
Deeney has picked out Carsley as the perfect man for Brentford, should Frank depart. Carsley worked as a development coach at the Bees before becoming caretaker manager when Marinus Dijkhuizen was sacked in 2015, with Deeney tipping him to make a return.
"I think where Lee could come in at a different angle is that I don’t think his expectation would be that he gets the top four job straight away. [With] Gareth Southgate, it was like Man United was where he was coming in," Deeney told talkSPORT.
"That was his entry point. I think Lee would be great at Brentford where he’s worked before if they moved on from Thomas Frank. I think he's tried. He's tried something. He's helped out.
"He could have easily said, 'No, thanks, I'm in with the 21s, I'm going to stay here where it's nice and safe'. He tried. Boosted his profile. Had a go at some things. And he's not spoken out of turn. He's not put us in a dodgy situation. So I think he's done really well on such short notice."

While Carsley is happy to be going back to his old role with the junior team, he did admit he had enjoyed working with the senior group. And the interim England boss insisted he and his staff have learnt much from that their spell in charge.
“I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s been challenging. It’s been a massive honour to have the trust from my bosses at the FA and I think we’ve shown we’re capable of doing it," Carsley said.
"My priority is to make sure I do a good job every day and it would be a great achievement to finish on a high. We didn’t perform well against Greece last month but responded well in the second game.
"I hopefully hand over a strong group of players capable of winning a major tournament. I’ll be back with the Under-21s, which includes support for the senior team. It's made myself and my staff a lot better. The experience and opportunity we’ve had can only help.
"This has been right out of the comfort zone in terms of the ability of the players, magnitude of the games and scrutiny of the job. It’s something we’re stronger for. It wasn’t a great experience losing to Greece at Wembley and you doubt yourself after making the changes we did but we have confidence we’re going in the right direction.”
