Sporting Lisbon fans bid farewell to departing boss Ruben Amorim ahead of their clash against Manchester City with a moving tifo of the Portuguese manager that read "Thank you" - ahead of his impending move to Manchester United this month.

Amorim has agreed a deal to become the next manager at Old Trafford, replacing Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was sacked last month following the club's worst start to a Premier League campaign in their history.

And Sporting fans gave United supporters a glimpse of how much they value the 39-year-old and what he means to the club with a huge banner of the highly-rated coach - in what was his final home game before joining the Red Devils.

The huge artwork showed Amorim in the centre with his arms crossed, accompanied by the words "obrigado" - meaning "thank you" in Portuguese - with the five trophies he has won at Sporting also pictured below him.

There was a rousing atmosphere throughout the game as supporters gave Amorim a big send-off - and it promised to be the perfect end to his time as Lisbon coach after his side cruised into a 4-1 lead against City.

Phil Foden had scored an early opener before Viktor Gyokeres hit a hat-trick, with Maximiliano Araujo grabbing the other, leaving Sporting in dreamland.

Amorim has agreed to take over at United on November 11 - with his first game in charge set to be the trip to Ipswich Town on November 24 after the international break.

He has one more game to coach with Sporting - a visit to his old club Braga on the weekend before turning his attentions to a monumental job at United.

Ahead of the City game, Amorim joked that fans would herald the arrival of the new Sir Alex Ferguson if he guided his players to victory over the Premier League giants.

"If the result [vs City] is negative, expectations will drop. If we win, they will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived," Amorim joked.

"What interests me is to win, [having] a good farewell in Alvalade, win in Braga and start a new adventure in Manchester."
